THE WILDLIFE

Early white explorers called the area "barrens," describing a landscape
"barren" of trees. While it may have looked that way, it was abundant with wildlife. Today, elk and bison roam our prairie. Smaller mammals, too, walk among the grasses: bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, rabbits and field mice. You may also catch of glimpse of wild turkey in the prairie.
Look up in the air: can you see a hawk soar? Listen: can you hear the chirp of an Indigo Bunting?
